My gosh, like the song says, it really is a small world. I spoke to my dad tonight {he is 89yrs} and he knows Crewe well. Do you or your wife; by chance know any Nicholls in Culpeper? Or Whitfields? {My Aunt and Uncle, now both deceased} in or around Midlothian? My dad grew up in a home called Benevenu, {sp?}A variation on the French spelling, and my grandfather, Nicholls, owned “Fighting Creek” plantation, now restored and owned by someone other than Nicholls.
I can remember in school {during history} the teacher often said Powhatan in a pronunciation different than my dad, who has lived here many, many years, but hasn’t lost his southern drawl!

But she says she doesn’t remember any one with those names specifically although Nicholls is a family name we both have heard and I have heard of a Whitfield Plantation, I don’t know if there is any connection. Last Wednesday wifes uncle and myself went to a little town called Marshall, about 40 miles on the other side of Culpeper for a funeral and as I passed through first Powhatan and miles later Culpeper, I couldn’t help but think of your post. My wifes family name was Owens and they were mostly in the Dairy business. I have lived in and around here in southside VA. most of my life, here’s some more places I bet your Dad will remember is Blackstone, Burkeville, Amelia and maybe Kenbridge And Victoria. Tell your Dad please don’t lose that southern drawl around here that a true sign of a real gentleman. And as for the pronunciation of Powhatan there are many variations most of us around say Pow wa tan, but that is only one of about 10 way, and don’t even get started on Powhite that was a Indian name that has been given to one of our parkway and no one can agree on how that should be pronounced. 😆

December 13, 2006 at 3:11 am #29330NormMemberThat’s great G ask your Father if any of your family moved to the South Boston Halifax area I knew some Nicholls in that area although I lost touch with them several years ago. Ask your Father if he ever knew a James Owens he is my wife’s uncle and he is about 77 and he lived in Powhatan for a while. And yes I agree it is fun to chat about the thing we have in common even though we are miles apart. You and yours have a very Merry Christmas. Norm

I know there was family in Halifax but I think they may have passed away. But now you have got me curious so I’ll try to find out. There used to not be a lot of Nicholls with the extra l in the spelling but not that uncommon now.
When my great Grandfather Winfrey Nicholls settled there from Ohio{yep he was a Yankee to begin with 😆 } They were getting mail for another Nichols so had their name changed to include 2 l’s. Later he owned “Fighting Creek”

PS My dad remembers Owens in that area but from years and years ago. I don”t think he recalls any specific names though.December 13, 2006 at 11:13 pm #29439generallParticipantPS
Regarding the pronunciation of Powhatan. My dad and family say Pow-wa-tan as well, so I grew up believing that was the only way. When my teacher in grade school said pow-hat-tan, being a precocious child, I was quick to correct her. I don’t remember if my correction was appreciated or not. I doubt it 😆 -
