Sir Robin made a light graceful approach to a long branch of a large old tree and gently settled on the very edge.
Blue Jay, who was still smiling was right behind Sir Robin, as he settled on the branch he started to look round where he was…..
“Wow!” Blue Jay was shocked, he had never seen anything like it in all of his young life. “wha, wha, what are those?” he whispered to Sir Robin.
“Aye it`s a grand sight to behold isn`t it young sir, a grand sight,” replied Sir Robin calmly.
“But what are they, and they are so tall and the different colors, what are they?”

From the branch that Sir Robin and Blue Jay were perched upon they could see for a long, long way. And not to far away from them were huge rock like structures, not structures you would see in the land of rocks and such, no, these were not at all like those, not at all.
“They really are nothing like the anything I`ve seen in the land of rocks” said Blue Jay, “do you know what they are, do you, huh?”
“Yes I do, my Grandfather Robin said they were called……”
Sir Robin turned to look at Blue Jay, “what I`m about to tell you will give you a shock, so make sure you are gripping tighly onto that branch young Blue, gripping tight.”
Blue Jays tiny claws bit deeper into the bark surrounding the branch, “OK, I`m ready,” whispered Blue Jay, who was a teeny weeny bit anxious now. He didn`t really want to know what those large funny colored things were if it was going to shock him, but then again he did want to know. “Okay Sir Robin, I`m, I`m ready, I think…..”

“They are called houses and that is where……………….well, that is where `People` live.”
Blue Jay was motionless, not a feather moved, nothing. If it was not for his little chest rising and falling with his breathing, Sir Robin would have thought he had died of shock.
“P, p, p, p, people,” gushed Blue Jay, “people live in them, PEOPLE!”
“It`s okay young Blue, it`s okay, they can`t see you or hear you, it`s okay. Now breathe, take big breaths, in and out, in and out. Yes that`s good.”
Blue Jay was taking deep breaths, not because Sir Robin had asked him to, but because he was more scared than a worm caught out in the open surrounded by birds.
“I, we, we, I, we should go now, we should leave now Sir Robin, this is not a place for me to be, no not at all, not at all. We should leave now.”
Blue Jay Spread his wings wide and was just about to soar into the sky and away from this horrible scary place, when there was a loud, very loud………..screeching high above them.

“Oh, where the heck is that stupid young Blue Jay, when I find him, I`m going to give him a piece of my mind, see if I don`t,” said the large Eagle “all this searching and flying and soaring and diving and soaring again. Checking this tree, checking that tree, checking valleys and dells, checking streams and fields, flying for ages to have a look at one tree all on it`s own in the middle of a field. I`ll give him a piece of my mind, oh boy will I.”

Bear opened one eye and then he other. I’m fine Wolfy, he said, just had the wind knocked out of me. That bullet was close!
He was playing possum! the little possum exclaimed. I knew it! I can always tell. He puffed out his possum chest.
Oh you big furry faker growled Wolfy to Bear. Here you had us all sad and worried.
Told you so, told you so, chanted Possum but a glare from Wolfy stopped him in his tracks. He immediately fell over and curled into a tight ball.
That’s enough playing possum for one day snarled Wolfy. Now that you’re here, you can be of some help..unless you want to become my next meal!
Possum instantly sprung to life and though frightened was curious about what he could do to help such a great creature as the wolf.
Bear lumbered slowly to his feet. I was not faking he said, I was knocked out! But truth be known he had fainted but of course he could and would never admit to such a cowardly act.

The huge and splendid eagle soared through the sky and with his keen eyesight spied Robin below. Robin was flying in circles and calling Blue Jay’s name. Finally he came to rest on the branch of a huge pine tree and was startled when eagle landed on the branch one over.
I have been looking for Blue jay since sun up complained Eagle. The squirrel family reported that Blue Jay was last seen in your company. The master is in a fit! Who are you and what have you done with that little idiot?
Robin made a feeble attempt to puff out his red breast and appear brave though he felt anything but brave. He did not like the hungry look in Eagles eye. I am Sir Robin he said without much conviction, and I gave shelter to the blue jay last night. We were on our way to seek assistance but he has ah.. well.. ah.. disappeared. He was right behind me when we left the edge of the forest where the people dwell.
Oh this is indeed serious said Eagle. Why for two feathers, I’d eat you right now….

Blue jay sat perched on a branch intently watching the people structures. He had not even noticed that Robin had flown away. No, he was totally engrossed in the sight below.
A small golden hair child of about 8 years was putting delicious looking seed in a glass contraption that hung from a wooden post. She was humming a little tune to herself as she filled the bird feeder with the seed.
There, she said aloud, Now all the little birdies can eat. Her golden curls bobbed as she skipped about the yard.

“Wow, this is lovely, I`ve never tasted anything like it before,” mumbled Blue Jay as he forced more food into his little mouth – more than he should have, it was falling out all over the yard, sticking to his feathers, oh boy what a messy eater he is.

Blue Jay did not know he was being watched, not far away eyes were watching his every move.

“Ohh, I`ve never seen that bird before,” said the golden haired girl, “it looks lovely, all the blue colours and his feathers shine so much in the sun.” She wondered if she had time to go get her camera as she ran towards her bedroom.
“Ohh, ohh, where did I put my camera, where is it, it must be here somewhere,” she thought to herself as she opened the wardrobe doors and pulled all of her clothes out and let them dump onto the floor, then she ran over to the bed, looking under it, over it, inside it. Then it was the turn of the drawers, opening them and pulling out her clothes and again letting them fall to the floor.
“My gosh, oh my gosh, where is that silly camera?”

Then she felt a sharp pain in the bottom of her right foot – the camera had been mixed in with the clothes when she pulled them out of the drawers and had fallen onto the floor also.
“Owww, that hurt, what is it,” looking down and searching amongst the clothes she found the camera. Forgetting all about the pain in her foot, she gave a little scream of joy and raced towards the yard as fast as her little feet could run.
Stopping suddenly at the yard door – she had to put up a hand to stop herself crashing into the door as she was running so fast, peeping through the glass, she looked for the little bird – “there he is, there he is, ohh golly, he`s still there.”
Blue Jay was in bird heaven, he had never tasted anything so scrumpcious in all his life – which was not very long as he was still very, very young. He was busy filling his little belly that he did not notice or even hear the yard door open or see the little blond girl walking towards him.
“A little bit closer, just a little bit closer,” said the girl to herself as she took one slow step after another, trying to get a little teeny-bit closer to the lovely looking bird.
Slowly she raised the camera to her eye and looking through the viewfinder she centered the little bird and was just about to click the shutter when…………..

    CRACK!

The noise was so loud that little Blue Jays heart missed a beat, a cold shiver ran all the way through him from the tip of his little beak all the way down to his smallest tail-feather.
The little girl stood rock-still, not daring to breathe, she had not noticed the twig in the yard, did not notice as she crept closer to the little bird, did not notice as stepped on the twig – she did notice when she heard the twig snap.
It was only a little twig, but it was so quiet in the yard that when the twig snapped it sounded like the 4th of July celebrations.
So, there they were. Blue Jay frozen stiff with fright and unable to move, the little girl stood rock still, saying to herself, “don`t fly away little bird, please don`t fly away.”
She was now holding her breath fit to bust, not wanting to make anymore noise. Anyone passing the yard, would have thought they were looking at a statue she was so motionless.

Blue Jay was listening for any kind of sound, he didn`t dare move as he did not know what that loud `CRACK` was.

“I see him, I see him,” screeched Sir Robin, “down there, look, down there.”
The Eagle and Sir Robin had been soaring in the sky when Sir Robin spotted crazy Blue Jay.
“Yes, yes, I see him,” said the Eagle, “and he`s in danger, look there is a small people thing approaching him, carrying something, carrying something. Ohh nooo Sir Robin, I think it is one of things they use to kill our animal friends.”
They both watched in horror as the small people thing got closer and closer to Blue Jay, raising it`s arms and pointing towards Blue jay.

“Sir Robin, you must fly to Blue Jay as fast as you can, faster than you have flown in your life, warn him, warn him, go, go, go go, now, I`ll attack the small people thing, hurry go, NOW!”

Sir Robin swept his wings back and dropped like a stone, hurtling towards Blue Jay, going faster and faster and faster.
The Eagle turned to his side and then dropped, swooping towards the small people thing. He gave four great beats of his huge wings, swept them back and sped like a rocket towards the small people thing, his talons were ready for ripping and clawing and slashing…………..
