Generall wrote: Meanwhile Blue jay, who was unaware of the calamity back home, had a hundred questions for Sir Robin…

How long have you lived in this tree Blue Jay asked, then hastily added after the look Sir Robin gave him, errr…I mean how long have you been in this fine house? Where is your wife? Do you have any little fledglings? Where is everyone? Why is it so dark here? Do you think that hawk will come back? What was that noise? How far am I from all my friends? Do you think they will come looking for me? I didn’t mean any harm! I’m just a small blue jay, so I couldn’t have done much damage! Blue Jay tucks his head up under his feathers and was trembling so hard, that Sir Robin took pity on him.

Hey there, now hey, please stop that little Blue Jay! I didn’t mean to be so hard on you, but we have had a lot of trouble around here lately and I had to send my family away. If you will stop all that, you can come inside and share my dinner with me, you look like you could use a good meal. Blue Jay slowly looks up from under his feathers, thinking it’s a trap, and notices with shock that Sir Robin has tears in his eyes! Blue Jay thinks to himself, oh my, oh say, Sir Robin isn’t a mean old bird, he’s, well, why, he’s, he’s LONELY!

Well, sure, Blue Jay says, I could use something to eat…it’s been a long time since I had anything at all. Then follow me, Sir Robin said. We’ll go have dinner, and I’ll tell you all about what’s been going on around here. Blue Jay looks around to make sure that Brown Bear hadn’t suddenly appeared out of nowhere, and asked…you don’t mean, could you mean, dare he say it, and whispers, ppeeople??

Back in the forest with the other birds and animals, things seemed to be getting back to normal – if normal was ever possible.
Teacher had regained his senses and was a little bit embarassed about the whole thing.
“Stop touching me, stop touching me, will you PLEASE stop touching me,” Teacher hooted loudly as he pulled himself to his feet. Standing, he slowly looked round at all the others….
“OK, now then, this is no way for creatures to behave, we are smarter than that,” said Teacher slowly walking a small circle, eyeing each of them in turn. “Blue Jay is still missing and we waste time here falling over each other`s shadows, it has to stop, do you hear me? It has to stop right now.”
Bear and Wolfy had slowly walked up behind the other`s as they stood listening to Teacher…..They both had waited until Teacher took a breath of air and then………..!”We are wasting time,” growled Bear, “we must leave now, now!”
No-one was able to move, the loud roar of Bear`s voice had frozen them in place with fright and terror.
“As Bear says, we are wasting time,” growled Foxy who was impatient to set off, “well leave now and the rest can catch up at daylight. You birds must leave at first light. Eagle, you have the best eyesight so you must gain the greatest height. The other birds will fly through the forest calling Blue Jay`s name. The animals will follow close behind, do you all understand?”
No words were spoken by anyone, they just all nodded their heads in one motion.
Teacher feeling a little bit snubbed by this, was not happy at all, thinking to himself – “That is just what I was going to say, how dare those two ruffians, those two big oafs, those two big, big, big, pieces of meat and fur burst in and take control.”

Bear and Wolfy turned slowly and began to walk quite fast into the darkness of the forest, in next to no time they had been swallowed up by the darkness.

“OK, ok, gather round, I`ll tell you what must be done,” hooted Teacher.
“Oh do be quiet Teacher,” said Rab, “we know what we have to do, it will soon be daybreak, so I think we should try and get some sleep, daylight is going to bring a long day and hard work.”
All the other birds and animals nodded in agreement and began to settle down and catch some much needed sleep.
“Well I never,” said Teacher. He was quite upset about the nature of events. “I`m the wise one of the forest, I`m the one who everyone comes to when they have a problem, I`m the one the young and old seek when they want answers, I`m…..”

“Oh, do shut up Teacher, we`re trying to sleep, please,” whispered Rab.

Poor old Teacher didn`t know what to say. For the first time in ages he – the Teacher – was stuck for words. Teacher spread his wings and soared onto a high branch of the big ol` tree. There he sat with his head burried in his feathers. Poor old Teacher was feeling really sorry for himself.

It was all quiet, no one stirred – except of course Badger and his family, they loved the darkness, and as you know, they only came out at night.

“We seem to have been walking for a long time,” said Wolfy, “How do we know we are going in the right direction?”

“We don`t,” replied Bear. “It will be getting light soon, so the birds will be able to check much more of the area in a shorter time than we are able to.”
Wolfy didn`t reply, he was concentrating on the dark wood and using his nose, sniffing the air for strange smells. Which is, when you think about it, a bit silly, the forest is full of strange smells.
Bear suddenly came to an abrupt stop, Wolfy had to do a quick sidestep or else he would have walked straight into Bear`s backside.
    “ugh,” thought Wolfy, imagine that…
Bear`s head was raised slightly and he was sniffing the forest air slowly, very slowly.
“What`s wrong Bear?” asked Wolfy, squinting his eyes trying to see deeper into the forest. “What do you smell?”
Bear did not reply, he was stood rock still, still sniffing the air. Then he gave a low deep roar. “What`s wrong, tell me,” whispered Wolfy. “What can you smell, tell me, oh go on tell me.”
Bear slowly turned and looked at Wolfy, his eyes were a fiery red, hios fangs were showing……………………”People!”

“P, p, peo, people,” gasped Wolfy. His eyes were darting all over the forest, concentrating hard try to penetrate the deep forest wood. Then Wolfy caught the scent of people, and he to was feeling anger. An anger that was old, older than the trees in the forest, handed down to all animals and birds in the forest, generation after generation after generation.
Wolfy had witnessed what they can do with their sticks that shot flame and caused a loud noise, Wolfy had witnessed his friends suddenly collapsing for no reason and just laying there until the people picked them up and put them into a large sack.
“Come with me,” growled Bear. “come with me quickly, now!”
Bear and Wolfy began to backtrack, to get as much space and time between them and the people.
“We must warn the others, we must warn the oth………”
There was a very loud crack – like a thunderclap, Bear stumbled, picked himself up and then stumbled again……
