Lilly, how did you get here? How come you’re in your clothes and they’re dry, asked Sarah. Lilly looked at Sarah as if Sarah had lost her mind and said, I have been here all morning waiting for you to go into town. Sarah, shaken and white, didn’t say a word but went quickly into her bedroom and sat on her bed to think. Something is terribly wrong here. Either I’m having an awful nightmare or someone is playing an awful joke on me and I don’t like it one bit! I’m either going to have to ask Lilly to leave or I’m going to have to leave until Mike (her boyfriend) gets here. Sarah, shaking, goes back to Lilly’s room and tells her she’s going to take a hot bath and rest for awhile before leaving to go into town.
Lily tells Sarah, sure go ahead, we have the rest of the beautiful day to take advantage of. Sarah just stands and stares at Lily, because it is raining and cold outside. Not even bothering to correct Lily, Sarah goes and draws her bath. She is just stepping into the tub when she hears music coming from Lily’s room. Sarah thinks to herself, Oh, that sounds so relaxing. Just the thing I need to lay here in the tub and relax for a change. Sarah gets in the tub, and is feeling so much better when all of a sudden the music changes tempo….
It no longer sounds comforting but sad and dark.She suddenly realizes there is no power yet, in the old house, she would check on that in town as well. The unmistakable sound of a violin grew louder and more fervent. Knowing she would have to investigate, she slipped on her robe. Why can’t I just have a normal day? she wondered. She had come close to a break down a few weeks ago, and everyone had tried to convince her she needed to get away for awhile. Well here I am, she thought, caught uo in some kind of crazy nightmare from an Agatha Christie novel! She pulled her robe tightly about her and moved toward the music…
and there Lilly is dancing and talking as if someone is holding her and speaking to her and she is answering them. But who could she think she is talking to? Sarah decides that Lilly is doing all this either to divert her attention from what she had planned for the day or to drive her totally over the edge. She thought I’m just going to dress myself and go into town and research this house before anything else stops me. I have to find out what all this Lilly business is all about and if she did ever live here. While she’s dressing, she’s also making a mental note about the electricity and the phone and also a couple of items she needs at the grocery. By the time she’s ready to sneak down the stairs, the music has stopped and Lilly’s door is closed so Sarah quietly…….
