……they spent about an hour just talking about nothing in particular before everyone decided it was time to go back to bed. Everyone said their good nights and went off to their own rooms. Sarah was still having a hard time sleeping once back in her bed. Hattie was in the rocker and kept a watchful eye on her. Finally the whole house fell into a deep sleep and it was past nine the next morning before anyone awoke. Terrance and Frank were the first ones down and were making coffee and quietly talking to one another when Mike entered the room. Instinctively they both stopped talking and said their good mornings to Mike. It wasn’t too much longer before Beth, Sarah and Hattie came into the kitchen. The men had fixed breakfast and everyone sat down to eat. They discussed their plans for the day which they lightly touched on, not getting into any particulars. After they were finished, the women stayed to clean up. The men headed outside. Sarah wondered out loud how they were going to get anything done with Mike hanging around the house. Hattie said that maybe if Sarah felt she could feel at ease with Mike for the day maybe they could go to town so that the group could search the house. They could even say they were leaving so Mike wouldn’t feel as if they were trying to pull something over on him. Just then the screen door opened and in walked….

Mike looked at her in silence for a minute and Sarah worried that he had guessed her ruse, but he agreed and they returned to the kitchen to tell the others of their plans. Soon they excused their selves to get ready. After a quick shower, Sarah donned a simple but attractive dress and came downstairs to wait for Mike.
As she came into the room, Terrance whistled softly and his eyes did not hide his appreciation. The others smiled and Sarah found herself blushing.Mike glanced over at Sarah and said, You look more relaxed since we’re out. Aren’t you enjoying your summer here? It’s alright, Sarah told him, it just seems like I’m not comfortable in that big old house by myself. I do appreciate that Hattie has befriended me. I know she’s a little rough around the edges but her heart is in the right place and she’s been very kind to me and wonderful company. Thank you for having the electricity turned on, I wish I would have done that because it makes such a nice difference. Sarah smiled at him and felt the warm feelings rush back that she had once felt for Mike. Silently she thought, I have to stop thinking like this, I have to remember that until we find out what exactly is going on with the house and Mike, I have to control my emotions until all is settled. Just then Mike asked her what she thought about going to the next town to the hotel there for a nice lunch and maybe a show and he said, I’d also like to buy you an outfit. What for, Sarah asked puzzled. Because you’re my special girl, Mike said with a wink and a smile. The rest of the ride was done mostly in silence with just the warm wind gently blowing on their faces and a sense of security and oneness as they headed toward the town limits.
Meanwhile, everyone back at the old house was busy searching for something…….anything that might lead them to a clue as to what it is that they were in search of. Terrance had come down from the attic and went to see how Frank and Beth were doing before he headed outside, he called out to Frank to see exactly where he was so he could go to him but there was no answer, again he called out, no answer, What is going on, he asks to no one in particular, where could they have possibly wandered off to? He headed toward the back door and…..
