As they turned onto the street where the old house stood she saw that Mike must have either bought lanterns for most of the rooms or had the electricity turned on because the house was alive with light, Sarah nervously turned to Hattie and said..Hattie simply said, You talk to the others, wait a couple of minutes, then follow me in. She jumped from the truck with lightening speed and disappeared into the house. Sarah made a pretense of helping Terrance and his friends get their bags from their car while filling them in on Hattie’s plan. Soon the group entered the house. Mike was standing just inside with Hattie and though he looked somewhat perturbed, he greeted the new comers politely. Apparently he bought the little story Hattie concocted during the drive home. Sarah felt herself relax a little and Mike turned to her and said,

As they made up the beds, readying them for the night, Beth could see the lines of worry on Sarah’s face and stopped to tell her not to fret. Terrance chimed in and said, You don’t have to be frightened as long as we’re here, Sarah, nothing will happen to you, I make that promise now in front of Beth. Sarah, embrassed, lowered her eyes but gave a faint smile, thanking Terrance and Beth for their kindness. I know that you three are going out of your way to help me because of Hattie being your friend, and you just don’t know how much I appreciate it. Beth and Terrance both try to convince Sarah that they would have done it even if Hattie were not in the picture. The three of them finish up with the beds and Sarah sends them downstairs saying she was going to do some touching up in the rooms and then meet them downstairs in a few minutes. While Sarah is in one of the rooms, she decides she’ll go down to the second floor to shower. As she’s going down the stairs, she runs into Hattie and asks her what is going to happen once their three friends are going to have to leave. She tells Hattie how afraid she is of Mike and how she doesn’t feel as if she wants to be alone with him. Hattie tells Sarah not to worry that tomorrow they will start a search for anything valuable that may be in the house. One of the men will take Mike out for a “wild goose chase” as Hattie calls it while the others look. Sarah nervously said, but what if Mike finds out what we are up to, Hattie? Don’t you worry, Child, everything will turn out just fine. Don’t show that you have anything to be frightened of or you may alert Mike that we’re on to him. Okay, Sarah said, with not all that much faith in her voice. I’m very tired and going to take a bath and go to bed, can you make some sort of excuse for me with the rest of our guests, Hattie? Sure, Child, I’ll take care of it, don’t you fret. And with that Hattie was out the door and on her way down to join the others…
