I have to go in to town for awhile, Mike said. Apparently the mail service out here is few and far between and I am expecting some papers err I mean a letter. Glancing towards Sarah, who appeared to still be sleeping, he said. How is she?
Of course, agreed Mike, but Hattie thought she detected something other than concern on his face. Perhaps if I try to wake her, he said and started over to the bed.
Hattie looked at Sarah and realized that she had been faking for the past few minutes not wanting Mike anywhere near her. Sarah, what’s wrong now child? You all of a sudden got very ill and have been in bed for a long while. I was so worried about you. I think it’s a very good idea that you didn’t let Mike know you were awake. Something is really strange about the way he has been acting, and I am beginning to worry that you are not safe around him. Hattie pulls a worn and strange looking bag from around her neck, and hands it to Sarah, mumbles something under her breath, and tells Sarah to keep it with her at all times, that it should keep her safe if Mike had anything sinister in mind for her. Hattie bows her head wearily thinking that she didn’t know how much longer she could protect Sarah, she was just getting too weak to fight much longer. But, Hattie, Sarah said, wait, there is something I have to tell you about what I saw on the stairs before Mike gets back! When I was walking behind you and Mike, I felt a presence holding me back, and I heard a voice calling to me and telling me to go look inside the book that Lily was reading when she was here, and that I would find the answers to all my questions in it, but to be very careful that Mike did not know that I had found it because…
