Shaky, Sarah decided with a jolt to spend the night at the hotel in town and research further in the library tomorrow delving more deeply into the past of the old home. Maybe I can also speak to the town manager and see what they can tell me regarding the old house. Sarah turned to Hattie and told her of her decision. Child, I think you are making the best choice. I’m mighty proud of you. With that, Hattie pulled onto the road and headed back toward town.
After driving for a few minutes, Hattie unexplainably made a u-turn. We have to go back to the house after all, Hattie said. I want you to pretend nothing is amiss if Mike is there. In the morning we will begin our search for the missing will.
Although frightened, Sarah complied. Hattie would be with her after all, and she felt she really should see Mike.Dreading facing Mike, and knowing that she would have to do some acting to get through the night, she climbed slowly up the steps, not knowing if she was really going to be able to pull it off. She opens the door to total darkness, and nothing but silence. She flipped on the light switch but it seemed the power was out. Fumbling her way into the kitchen, she takes a candle from the drawer, lights it, and started up the stairs to the second floor. The creaky stairs sure sounded spooky in the silent old house! When she was halfway upstairs, she stopped suddenly as she felt a cold draft come out of no where, and the candle blows out leaving her in total darkness again! She stood there not knowing what to do when she hears a voice cry out to her in sadness; Foolish, foolish woman! I have tried to warn you in so many ways yet you still…..

Refuse to realize the danger this house holds!
Sarah remained frozen on the stairs. The darkness seemed to take on a presence of its own. The voice sounded so familiar, almost like Lily! Should she leave now or remain and face whatever was in store. And where was Mike? Why did Hattie desert her so suddenly? She felt tired and confused. She took another step up the stairs and called out. Mike? Mike is that you?
