In Vermont, when you make maple syrup, while it’s still HOT, and I do mean hot, you take it out and pour it on some snow that’s in a bowl. It turns it into kind of a sticky, hard really sweet stuff that people go nuts for. Didn’t do too much for me. I’d rather be in here, in my warm house, eating maple syrup on pancakes!!!

Sugar making, as they call making maple syrup, is cold, hard work. We had a sugarworks, my husband has done it since he was a kid. But, boy is it work!!!! That’s why you get $40 a gallon for the good stuff!!!

Around here they Tap a few trees…they have a Maple Surup Weekend Festival about 25 miles from here. I’ve never been to it, though.

Sure seems like it would be long hard work & the conditions would have to be just right too, wouldn’t they?

Yeah. It HAS to freeze at night, and get above 32 in the daytime for the sap to run. We used buckets, and a pipeline. And there is usually at least 1-3 feet of snow on the ground! More, sometimes. We used a tractor to go through the woods to gather, and get the sap back to the sugarhouse. It takes 40 gallons of sap to get a gallon of syrup. That’s a lot of gathering! And you can’t gather once the trees start to bud out because that makes the sap bitter.
