This is my favorite recipe of all recipes! We used to eat there in the “olden” days. It was a bait house/b.b.q. joint/gas station/beer barn. They had it all.
No restaurant has come close to this sauce.
Crestwood Barbecue Sauce
This is the recipe I use 99 times out of 100!! Not sticky sweet, a little tart!!
4 quarts Campbell’s Tomato Juice
1/2 pint Heinz apple cider vinegar
1 pint Worcestershire sauce
1/2 pound dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
2/3 cup onion powder (not salt)
1/2 cup garlic powder (not salt)
Stir all ingredients together and bring to a boil. It is not necessary to boil for more than 2 minutes.
This was the sauce used by Elliot and Mildred Bennet when they owned Crestwood Barbecue here in Waco. I have never had any sauce that was equal to this!!
I found the recipe years ago in “The Great Chefs of Waco”-presented by Historic Waco Foundation, 1987.
