It seems that more and more medications are being prescribed to help with everything from lowering your cholesterol to diabetes. While certain medications are most certainly a good idea and even necessary, there are certain health conditions for which turning to food can be quite helpful.

Not only is food being used as a natural cure for certain conditions, but it can even be a home remedy in helping to prevent certain ailments. Think about any health conditions for which you currently suffer or are worried about preventing in your future. There are bound to be some more natural measures that you can take to ensure that you maintain the picture of health or help to get yourself on a better track. If you want to lead a healthier lifestyle and turn to the right foods to do that, educating yourself on the right options is the first step in the process. It’s true when they say you are what you eat.

Lowering Your Cholesterol One Food at a Time

Having high cholesterol seems to be quite common these days, and that’s likely due in large part to the poor food choices that people are making. Sure high cholesterol is a genetic predisposition, but by eating the right foods you can do wonders in lowering your cholesterol or preventing an increased level in the first place. One of the single best foods you can eat to lower cholesterol is walnuts and almonds as they offer the “good fat” that does wonders in keeping your levels in check. Another important food to consider is Omega-3 fatty acid found in fish oil. Whether you eat foods such as salmon directly or take this through a supplement, this can be a powerful aid in lowering your cholesterol level.

The Power of Blue

Blueberries are one of the single best foods that you can eat, often being referred to as a “super food”. Not only are blueberries low in calories and high in fiber, but they are loaded with antioxidants. This means that they can help to prevent heart disease, lower your risk of certain types of cancer, and help to fight off any potentially dangerous cells in the body. These are a surefire way to eat healthier and feel better!

The Ever Curing Garlic

At the center of so many home remedies, you will find garlic. Garlic is a super power when it comes to foods because it has virtually unlimited remedies. Eating a couple of cloves of garlic a day can help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, can help to naturally prevent the common cold, and can even help to clear up many stomach conditions. If you combine garlic with onions, you find an even more potent combination. These foods should be consumed each and every day, preferably raw, to help maintain a better picture of health and to get rid of any ailments overall.

Nature has been taking care of its creatures for tens of thousands of years, and making progress all the time. While modern medicine is a terrific advancement, there is a lot we can do for our own personal health without having to turn to more harsh and chemical alternatives for every ailment.

Mary Ward writes about various health care career topics, including how to obtain a masters in health care degree.

Whenever I make this in my house, it’s gone within 24 hours! Now I know to make 2.

3 1/3 cups reduced-fat buttermilk baking mix
1/2 cup sugar
3 tablespoons unsalted butter or margarine
2/3 cup fat-free egg substitute
1/2 cup skim milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup spreadable fruit (strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, etc)
1/2 cup confectioners sugar

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 15×10 inch jelly-roll pan with nonstick cooking spray.
In a large bowl, combine the baking mix and sugar. With a pastry blender, cut in the margarine until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the egg substitute, milk, and the extracts; with a wooden spoon, stir until just combined.
Spread two-thirds of the batter into the pan and smooth the top. Spoon the spreadable fruit evenly over the batter. Drop the remaining batter by tablespoonfuls evenly over the fruit. Bake until light brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 25 minutes. Cool in the pan on a rack for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, whisk the confectioners sugar with 1 tablespoon of water until smooth. Drizzle evenly over the top of the cake while it is still warm.

Serves 18

Please Note, this download is a .torrent file and can be downloaded with the following free software applications:

What is a .torrent/BitTorrent file?

BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P) communications protocol. BitTorrent is a method of distributing large amounts of data widely without the original distributor incurring the entire costs of hardware, hosting and bandwidth resources. Instead, when data is distributed using the BitTorrent protocol, each recipient supplies pieces of the data to newer recipients, reducing the cost and burden on any given individual source, providing redundancy against system problems, and reducing dependence on the original distributor.

Did that sound too complicated? Torrent is not much different than using programs like Limewire.

Now on to todays recipe…

I’ve said it before and I will say it again. I love spicy food ! Nothing is better then a nice order of buffalo wings! Recently my girlfriend and I started tying to eat more healthy, so I’ve been searching for healthy alternatives to some of our favorite foods. Here is a great recipe for a Buffalo-style chicken salad along with a recipe for low fat blue cheese salad dressing. I hope you enjoy!

4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
2/3 cups wheat germ
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1 egg white
1 cup celery sticks
1/2 cup low fat blue cheese salad dressing (recipe below)

Lightly spray rack of a broiler pan with cooking spray.
In shallow dish, combine wheat germ, chili powder, paprika, garlic powder and cayenne pepper.
In a separate dish, combine egg white and 2 tablespoons water; belt until frothy.
Dip chicken into egg-white mixture, coating chicken thoroughly
Place on the broiler pan. Broil 3 minutes; turn and broil an additional 2 to 4 minutes, until juices run clear when pierced with fork.
Slice into strips and serve over mixed greens with celery sticks and salad dressing.

Some just accept this fact, however more and more people are deciding to take action to lower body fat. It is best to get your weight under control before it becomes a serious personal health issue. With so many different diets out there today, it can be difficult to decide which diet is right for you. Recent studies state that Low Fat diets are better for you in the long run.

Many people who have been successful in weight loss have done so by limiting fat rather than carbohydrates. Low fat, high carb diet plans work better at keeping weight down. Only a minority of successful weight losers consume low carbohydrate diets. Many who chose a low carb diet are successful at first but end up gaining back the weight over time.

More than half of Americans who have tried a low carb diet have given up. Even the American Institute for Cancer Research has urged dieters to “come back to common sense.” It’s best to eat a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. You should also reduce portion sizes and increase your physical activity.

Low fat cooking is a great idea for your daily meals. Yes, I agree that much of the flavor in the favorite foods we love comes from fat. Many feel it is difficult to get back that flavor that is lost, but it certainly isn’t impossible. With a little guidance and experimentation you will discover the combination of seasonings that will make food enjoyable again. You can even lower the fat content just by using a different cooking method. Replace frying with baking and always use non-stick cookware.

We all want to be healthy. The best way to get on the right track is to start lowering your fat intake. A good low fat diet will help you lower weight and keep the weight off. At the same time, you will lower your risk of heart disease as well as other physical conditions. If you are not sure where to start, the internet can be a great resource for low fat cooking tips, recipes and other dieting support.
